The household at Victoria House and the Barn Annex are extended family units including accommodation for staff and residents. This creates a living situation based on mutual support and sharing.
Victoria House complex creates an atmosphere where life sharing is part of the ethos. The resident benefit from the feeling of security and stability that is created by this living arrangement.
Living together in this way creates a home life where a lot of social learning takes place. Everyone is expected to do their share in the running of the household. Simple tasks such as washing up, laundry, cooking and cleaning become ways of learning about responsibility and acceptance of each others’ abilities.
The Weavery Workshop
The Weavery Workshop is a studio where residents can plan, design and make weavery products. They are able to express their own creativity in a positive manner and receive commissions from the public. There is also a small gallery adjoined to our Café at Bran Yard, where the work is exhibited for sale.
Other Crafts at Victoria House
The residents at Victoria House get to take part in a huge range of craft activities, just like at Coleg Elidyr. Our Craft Enterprises include:
- The Weavery
- Felt Making
Many residents choose to broaden their experience, and find work that interests them. Taking a course, working in a supermarket and volunteering at a nature reserve are just some examples of the activities that residents engage in.
Volunteers come from all over the world. Many join us for a year and some stay longer. Volunteers help in creating a stimulating environment for our residents where they are able to learn and work with others in a healthy social and spiritual friendship based on mutual care and respect. They are also responsible for the welfare, development and safety of each individual and their work areas. In return they learn new skills from the residents and staff.
Being a Guest Volunteers does not mean that it is always work, there is also time to develop oneself in training and personal experiences. The friendships that are found in the community can be a life changing experience.
Guest Volunteers work on a voluntary basis which is based on mutual trust and a shared vision. The community does provide them with all their reasonable needs and an allowance every month.
