Your support needs will be identified during the assessment process and during your first few weeks here but we will continue to work with you, your parents and any other relevant professionals throughout your time here to ensure we have put in place the strategies you will need to succeed. Once you are at Coleg Elidyr, your house staff and tutors will meet regularly to monitor and review your immediate needs and progress.
In the house you will be allocated your own key worker who will not only monitor your progress but help organise health appointments and keep an eye on your general wellbeing. In addition, you will also have a Personal Tutor who will review your educational progress with you on an individual basis during a regular timetabled session each week. More formal reviews of your progress will happen every term. We also hold an annual review of progress, to which your parents and relevant professionals may also be invited.
To support you to achieve the most you can during your time here you may be able to access additional support services and therapies, including:
- speech and language therapy
- psychological services and behavioural support
- movement therapy
- art therapy
Therapy and Support
Coleg Elidyr provides therapies and professional support to learners according to identified need. Currently these encompass Speech and Language Therapy, input from a consultant psychologist and Bowen Therapy, although art therapy and eurythmy may also be available.
The college accesses the services of the Carmarthen Learning Disabilities Team (CLDT) in providing support for behavioural, psychological and communication difficulties. Our Total Communication Coordinator works together with both CLDT and our Speech and Language Therapist to provide ongoing input and support for learners. Improving the communication abilities of learners is a high priority and, to this end, the majority of staff (and many learners) have completed courses in signing. Symbols and signs are commonly used to augment communication.
A consultant psychologist provides assessment and support for learners, and also works with staff in providing strategies and behaviour management planning. The college utilises a low arousal approach to dealing with behavioural difficulties wherever possible.
