Amy - Senior Support Worker

The opportunity to work your way up over time.

I have been working for Elidyr Communities for 12 years now, I started off as support worker. I had already started my NVQ level 3 in my previous employment, but I was able to carry it across and complete it. I have worked my way up to senior support and I’m now part of the management team.

A typical day working at Elidyr Communities Trust

I often start work at 7am, and I do work some evenings and weekends. If I’m in at 7am, my morning starts off with supporting learners with their personal care and administering medication. We will sit together to eat our meals and chat about the day. We use a rota, so everyone takes their turn to complete household tasks, with a bit of support. Once that’s done, we prepare for daily activity sessions.

While the learners are attending their sessions, I continue with my day-to-day paperwork. On a weekly basis I check the medication and re-order, when necessary. I collect in medication, sign it in and complete stock rotation. I also regularly check the learners budgeting balance. When I have an evening and weekend shift it’s all about helping the learners prepare for activities of their choice. Individuals take it in turns to select what meals they would like to prepare for themselves and fellow peers, which is something I also get involved with.

The best thing about working at Elidyr Communities Trust

Seeing someone in the house independently complete a task that I’ve coached them to learn over time, gives me a sense of pride … and them too!

What would you say to someone who was thinking of joining Elidyr Communities Trust?

Try it! We offer taster days, come along and have a look around. Meet the staff and young people, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
